Let’s talk about what in my opinion is the best of this autumn . I’ve put together a selection of clothes, shoes and bags from the autumn collection that I think it will be hits over the next fews months!

Over-sized jumpers with carrot-style sleeves have proved to be the hottest shape for daywear this season. Balenciaga and Celine are two of the best examples. If you want to opt for something more ‘out there’, the sequinned top with skinny trousers from Balmain, the Chinese printed shirt with olive cargo pants from Dries Van Noten, or the tiger jumpers with skinny printed trousers from Kenzo are just the ticket. The stand-out star of the evening dresses has to be the red lace dress with 2inch heels pumps from Valentino. This dress perfectly balances  style and practicality.

The shoes for this autumn are much better than last year, in fact the shoes this season are more exciting than the clothes. The 2inch pumps from Valentino are so elegant and chic, but also comfortable to wear. The corset-like shoes from Jil Sander and Balenciaga are the stars of the season. There are also some stilettos to pull off with business suits from Stella McCartney and Yves Saint Laurent that will definitely breath new life to your day.

The handbags are a mix for both people who love the past or who are looking to the future. The 1950s-style bags feature in almost every show, including doctor bags from Prada, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs. On the other hand we also see some clean and forward-thinking bags from Balenciaga, Celine and Phillip Lim.

This years autumn collection for me is a mix of good and bad. I have to say that I’m not really a fan of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs or Prada’s silhouettes. I believe they look quite hard to pull off in the real world. The problem for me isn’t about wearing trousers under the skirt, but the A-line shape with overly decorated jewels and extremely loud prints – there’s a thin line between being chic and looking like a clown.

VALENTINO FALL 2012

Like a virgin, opulent and unspoiled. Sums up all Valentino’s girls under the reign of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. This is another great collection from the design duo; beautifully consistent work season after season.

Folk and traveller culture were used as the inspiration to create woven textiles and printed patterns. The colour tones are black and white, browns and pale dusty pinks, and Valentino’s signature use of red.

My favourite looks are the series of folk motif woven fabric dresses mixed with leather, and the mini-dresses in lace. If you have the cash to spare for these clothes, you should definitely buy some for the coming season.

BOTTEGA VENETA FALL 2012

A new look for the 21st century; Tomas Maier delivers a collection that contradicts what everyone else is doing. While roomy and over-sized clothes are being shown everywhere from New York to London and Paris, Maier’s fitted shape, exaggerated hips, and the generous use of frills and draping fabrics creates a strong, clean and elegant silhouette.

Even though the silhouette is deriven from Dior of old, Maier has managed to keep the elegance without being too feminine, or girly,  to create a more contemporary wardrobe for the modern woman.

One of the best dresses in the show is the orangey-red and grey velvet collage – absolutely stunning! It looks like something from Tate Modern.

This past few years have proved to be very successful for Stella. For example, the acclaimed polka-dot, cut-out peekaboo dress that Kate Winslet pulled off at the “Mildred Pierce” New York Premiere; and designing the British team’s uniforms for the London Olympics this summer; and the opening of her 2nd boutique in London.

The collection is all about white, black and blue. Peach and pink tone were also used for paring with olive browns in the middle of the show. I’m so in love with the blue, white and black embroidery. These clothes appropriate for the boardroom; confident and serious without emulating menswear. If I were a women, I would definitely wear these 24/7. How about you?

LANVIN FALL 2012

You can say it now and say it loud that Alber Elbaz is the best designer of this decade still alive and working today. The Lanvin show that celebrated the 10 years of Elbaz at Lanvin kicked off with all that Lanvin is best known for – fluid silhouettes with hyper feminine shapes, perfectly draped fabrics, incredible cutting, and YES! chunky jewels to embellish. No other designer could do it so well – so elegant.

My favourite is the series of colourful daywear at the beginning of the show. The embellishment on these streamlined dresses give them a couture-ish feel.

DRIES VAN NOTEN FALL 2012

As an Asian myself, I have to admit that this is the best interpretation of Far Eastern patterns and imaginary used in clothes – with digital prints of dragons and embroidered golden cranes. The fact that it is the work of a Belgian guy gives the clothes a refreshing, modern take that avoids the usual oriental clichés.

To produce this collection Dries sent a team to photograph all the oriental clothes on display at the V&A Museum in London. His approach to print design is so fascinating. He has managed to distill the busy patterns of these oriental pattern down to abstract shapes and lines that look modern and effortless. None of the frills and drama of Hollywood’s 1930s take on Shanghai style to be found here.

HAIDER ACKERMANN FALL 2012

Who couldn’t fall in love with Haider Ackermann! His past few seasons have been gems in the Paris Fashion Week. This season Ackermann looked no further than outside his window to find the inspiration for an amazing palette of autumn leaves in deep dark olives, greys, browns, oranges, blues and deep red tones.

I recently met a Chinese friend who was wearing a leather jacket from Haider Ackermann. It had very long, thick, judo-like leather belt, which can be used to create big interesting knots. It is the most beautiful leather jacket I’ve ever seen in my life!!!! Rick Owen’s leather jackets look like trash in comparison.

Ed and Nancy Kienholz’s installation, The Hoerengracht, was the main inspiration that is translated into neon light prints at Thakoon this fall collection. In my opinion, this is one of the best collections by Thakoon to date. The padded hips and the small waistlines create a fabulous hourglass silhouette. So fab in fact that I immediately had thought of the First Lady Michelle Obama, the powerful editor Anna Wintour, and the queen of style Carine Roitfeld.

The most amazing technique used in this collection is the weaving of leather into basket-style panels that are then inserted into the outfits. This intricate leather weave detailing makes these dresses some of the best of New York Fashion Week. You can just throw them on and voila! instant chic!

There’s also the use of shiny leather in black, ruby red and fuchsia pink. The black trench coat and the ruby red leather/wool coat are my favourite pieces from the collection.

These past few years have proved to be successful for many Asian designers in New York. They set themselves very high goals, and they really hit all mark. Congratulations to Mr Panichgul.
