The Yohji Yamamoto exhibition at V&A is the most exciting show of this season in London. This exhibition doesn’t just include womenswear collection but also includes the menswear collection for the first time.

The exhibition is at 3 different locations around London – V&A, Wapping Project Bankside in Hopton Street and Wapping Project in Wapping Wall. The main exhibition is held at V&A.

The show at V&A also has been divided into 7 locations around the building with the main exhibition room downstair (ticket required) showing 62 outfits, and extensive videos and print archives from the 1980s until today including interview films, fashion show videos, and catalogues. Yohji Yamamoto himself drew silhouettes of women on the wall of the main gallery (room 38).

The other 6 exhibition areas in V&A (free admission) show a selection of Yamamoto’s work that interact with the gallery’s permanent exhibits.

For me this exhibition is very fresh and inspiring. It clearly shows how masculinity and femininity play a central role in design while he visits the past and turns clothes into something very ahead of time. My favorite pieces in the show have to be the homage pieces that he created for Balenciaga, Dior and especially the stunning red pleated dress in homage to Madame Grès.

I also went to the free lecture from the exhibition’s curator. She gave a very interesting talk on how the exhibition had been planned and how she worked with Yohji Yamamoto’s team and Yohji himself in the project.

She said Yohji made a very clear wish that he would like the collection to be shown in very bright light and be free standing so the audience could walk around the piece and see every detail of the clothes. This is very unusual way to show costumes in the museum as normally too much light would damage the colour of the cloth. This decision was taken for the main room only (room 38) while other areas (free admission) are slightly darker.

I don’t have any pictures from Main room 38 as they won’t allow photography but I have some pictures from the lecture slides to show here with the floor plan (room 38) where Yohji himself decided how the collection would laid down.

The Yohji Yamamoto exhibition will be showing at V&A from 12 March – 10 July 2011 along with the photography exhibition Yohji’s Women at Wapping Project Bankside (Hopton St) and the magnificent display of his oversized wedding dress at Wapping Project (Wapping Wall).

This is my latest editorial work that I’m really happy with. It’s for the May issue of a Thai magazine called ‘Dichan’ – and it’s just out this week. The concept is supermodels. The girl, Joy Vararak, is a top supermodel in Thailand from the 90s. The photographer and I decided to photograph her in many different styles as we could.

The shooting required a lot of research for each outfit. We took 14 pictures with 14 styles. The photo shoot started very early in the morning with a lot of make up and hair going on with Joy.

The Photographer, hair stylist and make up artist I worked with were some of the best in Thailand (Nat, O-lek and To) without them the shoot wouldn’t have been finished in 7 hours.

It’s in an urgent and very tight budget shoot. In fact, We don’t have any money at all to do this shoot for Wallpaper because the picture will publish along with a small article in the magazine.

We did the shoot at the roof of my apartment, prepared all hair and make up in my room. The model, Anna, was very generously to do this shoot. We’re very appreciate for it. Thank you very much Anna :-)).

The picture will publish along with the article I write for Wallpaper. The story is about Japanese designer, from the 80s with legendary designers name such as Rei Kawakubo, Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto to the big name today likes Junya watanabe, Undercover and the latest one Limi Feu (The daughter of Yohji Yamamoto).

We didn’t even have enough money to lend any light equipments but we still did it best as we can. After the shoot, everyone (Apart from Anna) enjoyed my Wiskey collection that I brought from Scotland. This WPP* will out this month and I hope everyone like it.
